BEAUTIFUL LAYA/GASA TREK 22DAYS

Day 01 Arrival by Druk Air - Paro
During this journey, one will experience the breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan Mountains including the sacred Mt. Chomolhari and Mt. Jechu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro Airport, visitors will be received by our representative and then transfer to hotel for the night halt.
Day 02 Paro - sightseeing
Drive the winding road northwest up the Pa Chu to Drugy - el - Dzong, the ruined Fort which once defended this Valley from Tibetan invasion. Mt. Chomolhari, the sacred summit, can be viewed on a clear day. On the way back you visit a typical Bhutanese farm house. After lunch arrive to Ta - Dzong to visit National Museum, and stroll in the Paro town. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 03 Paro Excursion to Taktsang
Spend a full day hiking to Taktsang till the view point, the Tiger's Nest. This magical monastery clings to vertical granite cliff 3,000 m above the valley floor. It is believe that Guru meditated here in the 8 th century. The followers of Guru built the temple and later enlarge by Shabdrung in the 17 th century. After lunch hike back to Hotel. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 04 Paro - Shana
Drive up to Drugyel Dzong where the road ends and the trek begins. You follow the river gently uphill through a narrowing agriculture valley and villages. Camp near the Paro stream at Shana beyond an army post at attitude 2,800 m. Distance 17 km, trek about 5 - 6 hours.
Day 05 Shana - Soi Thangthangkha
Continue uphill through the river valley. It narrows and closes in and the trial winds up and down along the drainage. Camp is in meadow with some stone shelter built for trekkers at attitude 3,860 m. Distance 19 km, trek about 7 - 8 hours.
Day 06 Soi Thangthongkha - Jangothang
On up the Pa - Chu a small army post where the valley begins to widen again. Now views of the high ridges and then snow-capped Peaks are all around You begin to see Yaks and Yak herders winter homes. Lunch will be probably at one of these. Camp beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Chomolhari. Attitude 4,040m. Distance 19 km. Trek about 5 - 6 hours.
Day 07 Jangothang - Lingshi
Wild Yak pastures on the way up and down the pass ( Nyelila - 4,680 m. ), possibly still some people in their Yak tents depending on the time of year you are there. Great views of Lingshi Dzong as you come down into the Lingshi basin. Tserim Kang and its' descending glaciers at the north end of the valley. Camp on meadow with stone shelter built for trekkers at attitude 3,915 m. distance 19 km. Trek about 5 - 6 hours.
Day 08 Lingshi - Chebisa
Today is the shortest walking day and you can really take it easy. On reaching camp at Chebisa village you can visit the village houses. Attitude 3,910 m. Distance 19 km. Trek about 5 - 6 hours.
Day 09 Chebisa - Shomuthang
The walk is through wild high pastures with few people and few Yaks. Cross Gobula ( La means Pass ) at attitude 4,350 m. Camp here is on a bench above a river, a tributary to the Mo Chu which come out just below Gasa Tsachu. Attitude 4,260 m. Distance 17 km. Trek about 6 hours.
Day 10 Shomuthang - Robluthang
Today is a day to start a little early. After crossing Jarela Pass at attitude 4,600 m, you drop to Tsharijathang the valley where herds of Takin are normally seen. Overnight in camp. Attitude 4,250m. distance 18 km. Trek 6 - 7 hours.
Day 11 Roluthang - Lemithangb
After crossing Shingela Pass at attitude 4,870 m, you drop down again and then follow the valley. Lemithang is in the Laya District and here you begin to see the wonderful children in funny hats. Camp at Lemithang is beneath Gang - Chen Ta, Great Tigher Mountain. If you have time it would be worthwhile to spend a rest and exploration day here. Overnight in a camp. Attitude 4,090 m. Distance 19 km. Trek 6 - 7 hours.
Day 12 Lemithang - Laya
Today is all the way down hill along a winding river valley with quite a closed - in feeling. The trail splits, one going down with the river to the camp site used by the army. The other stays high and brings you into the west side of Laya village. You can camp on a high flat bench above the east end of Laya Village. Overnight at camp. Attitude 3,820 m. Distance 10 km. Trek for 4 - 5 hours.
Day 13 Laya - halt
Visit Laya Village houses or hike above the camp.
Day 14 Laya - koena
The trial winds up and down along the river valley avoiding natural obstacles and affording breathtaking views of the crashing river, feeder streams and water falls. Overnight in camp. Attitude 3,510 m. Distance 19 km. Trek for 7 hours.
Day 15 Koena - Gasa
En route cross Balela Pass at attitude 3,740 m. After pass the trail is all the way down hill till you reach the camp. The camp is near Gasa Dzong. Overnight in camp. Attitude 2,900 m. Distance 14 km. Trek 6 - 7 hours.
Day 16 Gasa - Gasa Tsachu
After a late breakfast trek to Gasa Tsachu ( Tsachu means hot spring ). After lunch relax in the hot spring. Overnight in camp.
Day 17 Gasa Tsachu - Geon Damji
After climb away from Gasa Tsachu the trail winds through rolling hillsides with vistas of fields, villages and Oak and Pine forests. Gasa Dzong will be visible behind you, glued to the valley wall seeming to float in space. Overnight in camp. Attitude 2,280 m. Distance 18 km. Trek 5 - 6 hours.
Day 18 Geon Damji - Tashithang
The trail descends from the high agricultural benches above the Mo - chu into a lush semi - tropical gorge filled with banana trees, creepers and an occasional monkey. Camp at Tashithang. Attitude 1,696 m. distance 17 km. Trek about 5 - 6 hours.
Day 19 Tashithang - Khuruthang
Drive down the Punakha valley past the monkeys and the King's golf course ( accessible only by raft ) and stop for a while to take some photographs of Punakha Dzong from the outside. Punakha Dzong was the ancient capital until 1966. The remains of the Shabdrung, the saint who unified Bhutan in the 17th century are interred here. The Je Khempo, head abbot of the Monk body of Bhutan, resides here with the monk body from Thimphu during the winter because it is warmer at this attitude. Camp at Punakha. Attitude1,364 m. Distance 35 km.
Day 20 Punakha - Thimphu
The drive to Thimphu will take about 3 hours. En route cross Dochula Pass at 3,300 m. From the pass if the weather is clear, you will have a beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 21 Thimphu - Paro
Sightseeing at Thimphu valley - visit Handicraft Emporium, Memorial Chorten, National Library, Indigenous Hospital and make the last day of shopping and drive back to Paro. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 22 Paro - Airport for departure
Drive to International Airport at Paro for onward flight to your destination.

SEASON : Mid April - June, September - October

GROUP SIZE : Minimum 6 but individual is also acceptable.

CLIMATE : Days are normally warm. Nights can at times be very cold and in winter sometimes comes to below freezing points. Monsoon showers in summer ( heaviest July, August ) and sometimes even in Spring and Autumn.

WHAT TO BRING : Personal clothing ( according to season ). Preferably cotton even for summer. Woolen clothes for evening and winter.

For Trekking : Strong comfortable trekking boots, sunglasses, headgear, raincoat and warm clothing for evening. A sleeping bag is a must. Medium heavy to heavy is advised. A torch light will also be handy. ( Note : for trekking a load of 25 kg per person is allowed )
